About Measure R
What is Measure R?
Measure R, on the June 3, 2025, special election mail-in ballot, will renew $1.6 million in critically-needed annual education funding to protect high quality instruction and maintain manageable class size in our local San Marino schools.
Why do we need to renew Measure R?
Measure R provides $1.6 million annually in education funding for our schools and is set to expire on June 30, 2025. To make up for gaps in state funding and maintain high quality instruction, our San Marino schools have relied on locally controlled, voter-approved funding through parcel assessments like Measure R for more than 30 years. Measure R funds are used to retain excellent teachers, keep class size manageable and protect our academic programs.
Is Measure R a tax increase?
No. Renewing Measure R will simply reauthorize the basic parcel tax at the same annual rate of $415 that is currently in place. Annual adjustment for inflation is capped at no more than 3%.
How will Measure R help San Marino schools?
Measure R Funds will be used to:
Retain 11 teaching and counseling positions
Continue advanced programs in science, technology, engineering, math and career technology
Maintain manageable class sizes
How can I be sure funds from Measure R will be spent as promised?
Measure R funds will be placed into a special account, and every penny goes directly to classroom instruction and support. Annual accountability reports are made available to the public to ensure proper use of funds. Senior citizens (age 65 and older), many on fixed incomes, are eligible for full exemption, and do not need to re-apply for exemption if they have done so in the past.
Do senior citizens need to reapply for exemption if they already are taking it?
No. If you already are taking the exemption, your exemption from the renewal of Measure R will be automatic.
How can we be sure that Measure R funds will only support local schools?
By law, all funds must stay in San Marino and cannot be taken by the State.
I don’t have children who attend SMUSD; how does this impact me?
